CMYK vs RGB

Artwork and images in CMYK or RGB

What’s the difference and why does it matter?

What is CMYK?

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (with the “K” representing the key colour, or black). This printing method is commonly referred to as full-colour or four-colour process printing, as all other colours are created by combining these four inks in varying amounts.

CMYK is the most widely used method for digital printing across a range of products, including paper, card and other printed materials.

What is RGB?

RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue, and is the colour format used for digital screens such as computers, phones, televisions and tablets.

RGB cannot be printed directly. Any artwork supplied to a printing company in RGB format will need to be converted to CMYK, either through the print software or by the printer itself. Likewise, a screen cannot display true CMYK colours, as all devices automatically convert them back to RGB for viewing.

RGB to CMYK Conversions

If artwork contains RGB images or elements, these will be converted to CMYK during the printing process. While image quality will remain the same, some colour variations may occur during the conversion process.

Certain colours convert very accurately, while others can appear noticeably different once printed. Photographs and natural images usually convert well, but brand colours and logos can be more challenging. This particularly includes bright vibrant colours which are created with light on a screen. For this reason, we recommend converting important brand assets to CMYK in advance to ensure you are happy with the final printed result.

Best Practice for Printing

For the most accurate and consistent results, we recommend supplying all print artwork in CMYK format, particularly where colour matching is important. We also advise reviewing a printed proof — either digitally or in person — before proceeding to full production, so you can check colours, layout, and overall appearance with confidence.
